Tips 1 - 4 of 4 Kyoto Things to Do

An exquisite palace built by a shogun in the 1290's. The original was burnt by a deranged student monk in 1950, but this is a faithful re-creation complete with real gold leaf. There is a trail around the reflection pond that continues up to another little pond and a temple dedicated to the god of fire, a tea house and refreshment stand. A tour of the whole complex should last about an hour, with time set aside for just staring at the scenery of the palace glimmering in the Sun. Admission was 500 Yen per adult.

Things To Do: Everything You Wanted to Know About Kimonos

Nishijin Textile Center is a worthwhile stop to see everything related to kimonos. There is a museum displaying many exquisite designs. Find out about how the original designs are transferred to a pattern and then watch as a weaver works a loom. There are periodic kimono fashion shows and , for a price, they'll even dress you up in one! Many textile items are for sale (on the expensive side, though).

The meditation garden is the prime draw. It''s probably not as big as you would think. We just happened to go there during Sakura, or cherry blossom time, which made it extra special.

The shogun's Kyoto home and its gardens are well worth a couple of hours to see. The nightingale floors are an experience all in themselves. The surrounding gardens with a pond are also very beautiful. The only negative is that photography is not allowed inside the palace.
