Exquisitely Preserved Old Town

by TexasDave - last update: Jun 26, 2005

Cherry Blossom Time in Takayama
I traveled up here from Nagoya one evening (in the dark) and spent a half day exploring the town, and then had to high-tail it back to Nagoya to catch my plane home.
Both the town itself and the views on the train ride up and down are well worth the time.
HINT: If you're in Japan in search of Sakura (cherry blossoms) and it has already passed in Tokyo and Kyoto, chances are good it will still be in full bloom here due to the cooler temperatures caused by the higher altitude. That's what happened to me at the end of April of this year.

Pros:"Quiet ambience, like a trip back in time"
Cons:"Can't think of any"
In A Nutshell:"Definitely worth the 2+ hr train trip from Nagoya"
