Avant Garde Architecture - New York City
Avant Garde Architecture

Favorite thing: New buildings are going up all over Manhattan. Enjoy 21st Century architecture like this building, the Westin Hotel Times Square, near Port Authority.

LOOK UP! - New York City
LOOK UP!

Favorite thing: Especially in the area around Central Park, take some time to look at the top floor, or penthouses, of the apartment buildings. Many are quite ornate and there is a lot of architecture to admire up there. Of course, the trick is to do so discretely, so as not to look like a country bumpkin who just fell off the turnip truck!
The penthouse I've posted as an example is right across the street from Trump Tower, 5th Ave, South of Central Park.
By the same token, sometimes you an see amazing artistry where you least expect it. The second photo is of an apartment building on the Lower East Side. Look at all the detail that went into the building's facade. They just don't make them like that anymore!

Subway Stop Mosaic - New York City

Subway Stop Mosaic

How Do You Pronounce It?

Favorite thing: A main street (and subway stop) near Greenwich Village is Houston Street. BUT... in NYC it is not pronounced like the city in Texas. So if you don't want to be taken for a tourist say it like New Yorkers do...HOUSE-ton street.

Delancy St. Station - New York City

Delancy St. Station

Subway Mosaics Subway Review

Favorite thing: When using the city's subway system take time to notice the variety of mosaics in the different platforms. Some are originals and others have been installed recently. Many highlight the uinque features of the neighborhood above the station, as in the picture here of Delancy St. Station, near the old Fulton St. Fish Market.
Canal St. (near Chinatown) also has some interesting mosaic work.
Even the smaller signs indicating the station name can be very intricate.
This is just a little freebie that can add to your overall NYC visit.
