Our first time in Venice was in connection with a cruise and was only a day, in early May, which gave us a taste of the city but we left with the desire so see more.
Our next visit, about 12 years later, we spent 2 nights at the end of March- days were still not warm but we were all right with heavy sweaters. We basically wandered around and enjoyed Venice serendipitously.

This last trip, again pre and post cruise, brought us back to Venice in mid and late November, which was a little warmer than in March but the threat of flooding was more of a problem. In fact, we left early in the morning on the worst day of flooding Venice had experienced in over 20 years. We had no idea until we arrived back in the U.S. that evening.

Almost everyone has pictures of St. Mark's Square filled with people and pigeons, but here's a view at about 7:30 in the morning.

Here was another rare photo opportunity- just my 6 yr old son and a few pigeons in St. Mark's Square. Quite a contrast to seeing the hordes of tourists.
