"Mountains, Mountains Everywhere" El Bolsón by TexasDave

El Bolsón Travel Guide: 20 reviews and 57 photos

El Bolson (the bag, or purse, in Spanish) is a small town about an hour's drive directly South from Bariloche. It sits right on the 42nd Parallel, which is the dividing line between the provinces of Rio Negro and Chubut. While there is not a whole lot to see in the town itself, it serves as the base for many outfitters providing excursions for horseback riding, canoeing, hiking, river rafting, etc.

The town enjoys a unique micro-climate being surrounded by tall mountains and yet it's elevation is only 300 meters above sea level. Although the mountains get their share of wind and snow it hardly ever snows or gets below freezing in the town itself. The area around El Bolson produces all kinds of berries, made into jams and sold all over town. The area also has rainbow trout and salmon farms and some local restaurants feature them as specialties of the house.
