Shoes to die for.....
Madonna is a boutique at a quiet end of the glorious shopping strip in the port area of Puerto Banus (Sinatra Bar end).
I loved it for its shoes, especially the Belen Donate brand that I adore and never see in Ireland.
They were having a sale while I was there and I got about one hundred euro off each of two pairs of shoes, plus a bag at a third of the usual price. Both pairs were sandles, and one of them was gloriously adorned with Swarovski crystals.
The sales assistant was extremely helpful and spent lots of time with me. She also gave me an extra discount over and above the sales one.
They stock men's shoes here as well as women's; they also stock some lovely clothes.
What to buy: NOTE - returning here in June 2009 it would appear that they no longer stock the Belen Donate shoes and concentrate more on clothing.
What to pay: Shoes at full price tend to cost €300 a pair, but at sales discount you may expect to get them for far less.
Directions: Standing with your back to Sinatra bar and facing the marina, walk to the right and Madonna is on the right about 50 yards up the street.
I have shopped in the alleged shopping capitals of Europe - London, Paris, Roma, Milan - but for its size noplace compares with Puerto Banus for style and for high priced high fashion shops per square foot.
This resort is aimed at the big spenders and every second shop is a famous designer name.
With prices so cheap for flights in Europe it would be worth your while flying out here if you wanted to outfit yourself in designer gear, whether that be for a special occasion or because that's the way you dress! You will be sure to find every one of your favourite brands within five minutes walk of the other.
For those without the big wallets, there are plenty of shops to meet the less costly end of the market here.
It's worth coming just to window shop.
Louis Vuitton have a very good store in Puerto Banus, and it's temptingly situated right next door to the delectable Los Bandidos restaurant in the port.
For those who don't regularly shop at LV, their shops are stocked at different levels, some doing just bags and luggage, others doing clothing etc etc. LV in PB stocks clothing, shoes, jewelry, watches, bags, luggage etc - all gorgeous and all frightfully expensive.
I was there to purchase, so I was most annoyed to be kept waiting for ages. One man had brought his whole family with him and they were going to buy a watch (I mean family as in all adults - grandparents, parents, and older children). It was very irritating when two sales assistants stood over one man while other customers and I waited to be served. The Manager was serving another girl and kep apologising to me. He called on one of the other assistants to leave the man with the watch and assist me. When he eventually got her attention she reluctantly detached herself from the watch-man and promptly went to a customer who had just entered the shop. Thankfully the Manager had the sense to point out her error and get her over to me.
At this stage I was almost ready to walk out but because I love LV so much I reluctantly stayed and bought what I wanted.
What to pay: Expect to spend a lot.
Directions: In the main port area right beside Los Bandidos restaurant.
Street traders lurk on every corner in Puerto Banus, plying their wares - fake designer handbags, belts, watches, sunglasses etc.
I took a look at what they had to sell and I was quite impressed - it's good quality and most of the fakes are pretty convincing.
It would be an ideal gift to bring back to that designer-hungry 12 year old niece who can't afford the real thing.
Oh, one tip - bargain them down hard. They'll settle for a small fraction of what they originally asked. Tell them you have lots of the real thing and this is just for a kid. Usually they relent.
