A Beautiful Medieval Hill Top Village

The highly picturesque, medieval village of Campodimele is perched high on a hilltop and is encircled by formidable, walls, cylindrical turrets, and ancient houses that form part of the defensive structure.

There is a path leading around the town walls, from which there are stunning views of the countryside.

The parish church, dedicated to St Michael The Archangel was built in the 11th century.

Campodimele - "The Village of Eternal Youth"

The town has been awarded the European title of "The Village of Eternal Youth" as it is noted for the longevity of its citizens.

It seems that they are a particularly hardy breed, who seldom have the need to visit a doctor, rarely die before the age of 85, and it is not uncommon for its citizens to attain the age of 100.

It may be due to the healthy mountain air, the mild climate, the slower, less stressful pace of life, eating a healthy Mediterranean diet made from good, fresh, wholesome local ingredients.

The elderly endeavour to keep themselves active, and are not left to fend for themselves, as they are cared for and supported by their families and others in this close-knit Italian community.
