Ben Thanh market: The Open Market

  • Ho Chi Minh City Ben Thanh market
  • Ben Thanh Market has EVERYTHING!!!

  • Going to Ben Thanh market is a must. They sell EVERYTHING there, from food stalls to designer knock off bags (much cheaper than what you will get from those outside stands in New York or Washington DC) to shoes and clothes to medicine. Some friendly hagglings are necessary because they will overcharge you. The best deals are designer knock-off purses, luggages and scarves. They have excellent prices for silk purses too. If you're in Hoi An, they have the best price for silk purses (and prettier). Shoes are also inexpensive, but they don't hold up really well. Check out the Biti's stores. They have cute sandals here and they are more durable. Also, sizes are MUCH SMALLER in Vietnam. If possible, wear a lightweight shirt and try your shirt on. I normally wear women's Medium in US comfortably and I bought a tennis outfit in size L and the top is a little snug across the chest.
YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO BUY RETAIL AGAIN!!!

Notre Dame Cathedral: Notre Dame Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • Using bricks from Marseilles and stained glass from Charles, Notre Dame Cathedral is situated in Paris Square, in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. A French priest set down the first brick for construction on October 1877 and the last one in April 1880. The cathedral was built in accordance with specific designs and drawings. Arrangements made with France required that the construction work be managed by a French engineer named Baurad. The total cost of the construction was 2.5 million francs.
