A MUST - Liverpool
The Philharmonic: A MUST

Here is the text of an "offical" flyer:

Affectionately known as 'The Phil; The Philharmonic Dining Rooms takes its name from the Philharmonic Half opposite. The pub, in its early clays, contained a restaurant on the first floor and was particularly used by gentlemen and their ladies attending the Philharmonic Hall concerts: There were facilities on the upper floor for coachmen waiting for their masters - cocoa was no doubt served to them rather than alcohol though!
The building was commissioned by Robert Cain & Son Brewery. It was designed and built by Walter `W Thomas, a brewery architect, between 1898 and 1900 a; a showpiece in the style of a gentleman's club.
The Phil' represents a dazzling piece of Victorian flamboyance and has been described as 'the most ornate pub in England' and 'the most lavish pub in Britain. John Lennon, when asked i f there was a downside to fame, remarked: "yeah, not going to The Phil anymore".
The Liverpool Heritage Bureau has described the pub as 'a magnificent Arc Nouveau confection o f stepped gables, turrets, balconies and orioles.' The artist, Frank Norbury, undertook much of the scone carving. In the Grande Lounge, formerly the Billiard Room, decorative plaster work called The Murmur o f the Sea' depicts Apollo with two female companions. There is also a decorative plaster frieze that runs around the room and caryatids - these were all designed by Charles John Allen.
The pub is perhaps most famous for its extravagant gentleman's toilet, with marble wash basins copper taps and exquisite, glazed urinals. It has become the tradition to allow ladies to view the toilet, providing they get permission to do so first! The two side rooms are called Brahms and Liszt a reminder o f the past when musical evenings were held in the Grande Lounge.
The Philharmonic Hall is home of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Choir and Society The original hall of the society was built in the 1840's but after a disastrous fire in 1933 it was demolished. The present hall was opened in 1939.
