These days, tipping is expected in most restaurants in Sydney. As a rule leave 10%, but if you really did have bad service and bad food, forget the tip. There are still some people around who think that because waiters are often paid relatively well that a tip is not necessary, but it doesn't hurt to give a "bonus" when you have had an enjoyable experience. It's also easier to round up the taxi fare for a taxi driver to the nearest $1.00 or add a couple of dollars extra, but if the driver gives you the run around and "pretends" he doesn't know the quickest route or gets lost - do not pay a cent more than you have to! I also find that it is appreciated when you give the hairdresser a couple of extra dollars for a good haircut.

Aussies celebrate our day in a variety of ways. A multitude of events are held all over Sydney on the 26 January, the anniversary of the beginning of British settlement. On this day in 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip became Governor of the Colony of New South Wales. There are many events held on Sydney Harbour, around Darling Harbour, out in the suburbs and also all over the state and the rest of Australia. The events include ferry races, hot air balloons, citizenship ceremonies, food festivals, fireworks, BBQs and concerts to name but a few. One of the major events for 2006 was at Coogee Beach where 863 very excited people took part in the Great Thong Challenge in an attempt to break the Guinness Book of Records world record for the longest line of people on air beds in the water. The record, previously held by the Germans, was broken on hot pink thongs!
