The Toronto subway system (though expanding) does not have the network of cities such as London or New York. The routes that it does travel, however, it is extremely efficient. Many people rely on public transport for daily commutes to work.

Toronto has one main airport for large commercial planes. There are, however, many smaller airports for smaller planes. One of them, is the Toronto Island airport. This airport is on an island just by the city. Most of its planes are propeller. I once met a businessman from Montreal who frequented Toronto on business. He said that for his purposes, he prefers coming through this smaller airport. Arguably, the flight is longer as he travels in a small propellor plane. He then reminded me, that his meetings are in downtown Toronto, just by this airport. Think of the time travelling downtows from the main airport, the traffic etc. The flight per se may take longer, for his purposes, this method reduces time dramatically.
I believe that there are even flights to New York from this airport. I have never been to this airport. What I love though, is having a drink or meal by the lake front and observing the planes over the lake arriving or departing from this small airport.
In fact, if you check the picture on the given website, you will see the proximity to the city!

The public transport system in Toronto is extremely efficient. Traveling by public transport can still take a long time due to the vastness of the city. You should therefore plan your route and feasibility beforehand. Also, the bus and subway is part of the same system, so you don’t pay when going from one to the other. From subway to bus, you take a transfer. From bus to subway, the bus takes you to an entrance where you can go directly to the trains. The subway and bus system is part of a system called TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) Be advised that certain buses that travel beyond certain boundaries are not part of the TTC and you would pay extra for using these buses. They are usually a different color too.
