"A city worth visiting!" Windsor by Martman

border city

This picture clearly shows Windsor the border city. The monument train is in Windsor, Ontario. The background buildings are in Detroit Michigan. There are two common methods to commute between the two cities. One can drive over the Ambassador Bridge or go under water using the tunnel. The strange paradox is that Detroit (USA) is NORTH of Windsor (Canada) ??? Your homework is to take an atlas and investigate why!

My Unexpected Wonderful Holiday

Hans took this picture of the 4 of us with his camera. Thank you Hans for giving me the pictures. Please give him the credit for this beautiful picture! Read on for details.

Life is full of surprises. I have a really nice friend called Dora from Chicago. On the evening of Friday 26 August, 05, she phoned me and said: any plans for the weekend? I responded no, why? She continued, Let us meet halfway between us in Windsor. The thought had never occurred to me. I then thought, What is stopping us? Why not? I therefore had the pleasure of seeing Windsor for the first time! There is nothing like spontaneous fun. While there, I had the pleasure of meeting the wonderful couple Hans (Waalewiener) and Lori (LoriPori). Meeting such genuinely nice people can only make a holiday more enjoyable. We really enjoyed their company. They are excellent VT ambassadors. We VTers should be extremely proud of them.

My suggestion is to please visit Windsor. It is a beautiful (but unfortunately overlooked) town in Ontario. I had always heard about Windsor and thought about one day visiting. Imagine, 24 hours earlier, I would not have believed that I would be in Windsor the next day. The result of what happened? I am not for one second sorry that I saw Windsor. Living in a large city, I found the atmosphere of visiting a smaller town extremely relaxing and friendly. To me, a city built by a lake is a huge plus. It has a soothing effect. It is really soothing to walk along the lake and watch the odd boat. Now that I have been there once, I plan to go again!

(Amazing how one holiday leads onto another. I met Dora in my Chicago holiday. This lead onto my Windsor holiday!)

I even found shopping dramatically cheaper than Toronto. Frequently we visit a town and assume it is cheaper just because it is smaller. When we actually compare, we discover that is not true. Windsor, however, I definitely found to be better value than Toronto. In this regard too, I was not disappointed at all. When I next visit Windsor, I plan to hold back on shopping until I am there.

The city that comes to life

In a short visit, one cannot really learn an area properly i.e.. What may seem true at the time may not always be so. During my evening of 27 August, 2005 in Windsor, I noticed an interesting phenomenon.

While walking the streets, my friend and I remarked how “dead” the place is, almost like a ghost town. We hardly saw another person.

So we thought….

Suddenly, bang, the city was suddenly jammed with thousands of young people. One minute “nothing happening” and suddenly “swarms of people”. It was not gradual; it was as if some one just pressed a button. This abundance of activity really gave atmosphere.
I am curious if this sudden change from “no one” to “everyone” is what happens on most Saturday nights. Unfortunately I cannot remember the exact time when this “unlocking the gates” happened.

This means that when you visit Windsor; do not be deceived by what is ostensibly a “dead place.” Just stick around a while longer and you will have a surprise!
