Port Douglas.... | The view from the town centre |
Is a fantastic cove about an hour north of Cairns on the Tropical North Queensland coast.
This place was discovered by shamed and now late Aussie businessman, Christopher Skase and his then wife, Pixie, in the late 1980's. He saw its potential as a secluded getaway location for the wealthy and built the Sheraton Mirage at Port Douglas, off the back of the policies of Sir Joh Bjelke-Peterson's State Government.
Consequesntly, the population rose from around 1000 to nearly 15,000. HOWEVER, much of Skase's development was built away from the town centre, and much of the charm of the place has been preserved, however, cafe's and designer stores have moved into the town.
Read more through the tips about this exciting place that mixes two worlds of wealth rather effectively. |
