"GUM? Yes? You know GUM?" The second week in August - cold and raining. But Moscow is designed to allow for bad, even terrible, weather, so it doesn't make much difference - there's tons to do inside, underground, bundled up - you name it. Bad weather just shows a different (and often more real) side of a city! |

There were almost constant weddings in and around the churches in downtown Moscow. Fun to be around! There's a very distinct line between the Old Russians and the New Russians - the Old Russians dress in long skirts, cover their hair, are usually real, stout, tired-looking. The New Russian is tall, slim, fashionable, busy, preoccupied. I discovered that if i did the far-off-focus-power-walk people would get out of my way instead of plow over me, and would address me in Russian. So there you have it - fake your nationality by acting disinterested. |
Cafe on Old Arbat I was AMAZED by how beautiful Mosow is. I guess I'd always pictured it gray, sullen, repressed, dull, uninteresting, but oh my goodness QUITE the contrary, the history and the current culture weave together in a facinating blend of old and new worlds! |
