Uxmal (pronounced "Oosh-Mahl") means “built three times” in the Mayan language. It is supposed to refer to the number of times the city has been rebuilt or expanded with major constructions, so the name is sometimes meant to be interpreted as "Thrice Built". Though its name is a mystery, its beauty is not. |
| | Pyramid of the Magician Pyramid of the Magician which you’ll find just beyond the entrance. Uxmal is one of the most well known of the Maya cities. There is a legend that the pyramid was built in one night by an enchanted dwarf. To this day it is still sometimes called the House of the Dwarf (Casa del Enano). It is permitted to climb to largest structure, the Pyramid of the Magician. The view on top of the Pyramid is well worth the effort, though the steps are extremely steep |
| | Detail of Uxmal The buildings at Uxmal are very photogenic, so don't forget your camera!
Tip: I definitely recommend the nightly "Light and Sound Show". It is very special and mysterious. Especially the sounds of the Mayan culture, it is fantastic, you really can imagine how it use to be back than. |
