A quote about Savannah.

Savannah is a gracious Georgia city basking in beauty, riches, and history. Radiant in her architectural splendor, she flaunts her stately mansions and beautiful homes, many of which boast impressive, ornate lace ironwork. --By Marilyn F. Winey, Standard-Times correspondent

Savannah was established on February 12, 1733 when General James Oglethorpe founded Georgia. The city was named for the Savannah River, a local waterway. Oglethorpe carefully planned the city's streets by using a grid pattern with 24 park-like squares. Savannah has the distinction of being the first city in the state of Georgia.

Time for some cold drinks!

I've been to Savannah a few times. I love Savannah because of the historic district's natural and architectural feast of moss-filled trees, cobblestone streets, flower-colored squares, gracefully styled 18th- and 19th-century townhouses and homes, abundant gardens, sedate inns, and stately churches, good restaurants and the live music. Do I need to say more? I love to go to City Market on Fridays and Saturdays. We mostly sit by Malone's. Always life music (we love Buck and Barry) On Thursday you'll find us at Tubby's.

As you can see in the picture, there was always time for a cold beer. Cheers!

2. First Moravian Church in North America, 1735.
3. First Sunday School in Georgia, at Christ Church, 1736.
4. First practical cotton gin, by Eli Whitney, 1793.
5. First golf in the United States , 1796.
6. First steamship to cross an ocean, S. S. Savannah, 1819.
7. First use of rifled cannon in modern warfare, at Fort Pulaski, 1862.
8. First motorized fire department in United States, 1911.
9. First Girl Scout troop, founded by Juliette Gordon Low, 1912.
10. First Nuclear-powered merchant ship, the N. S. Savannah, 1962.

Update

I just got back from our holiday in Savannah and Florida. As always Savannah was great to spend a few days. We walked everywhere. Through every square. Down to Forsyth Park and up to River Street.
I have also wrote some new tips for those who wants to go to Savannah. Some nice restaurants, bars and sightseeing.

I love the area of Savannah so much that I'll be publishing a book among others, on the city and its outer scenic stops. In the meantime, you can view some photos of Savannah on my website at www.johnstonphotos.org

Nice page! Wish I had seen the Mercer Williams House, but guess you can't do everything in one visit. Some lovely scenes and ideas...good tips.

Thank you for reminding me of the beauty near my own home which I have not yet seen. I was supposed to visit there last weekend but did not make it. Soon. I hope! Why do you go there so often?

Now that you can have more than one picture for a tip, why not put all the pictures in one tip?

Good and useful info, especially the restaurant tips. My wife and I are headed to Savannah in October for our 25th anniversary.

I saw that guy BOTH days I was there. First, it was on the Riverwalk. The second, we were on... umm-- I can't remember the street name right now-- but the one that you come out on from the end of Riverstreet if that at all explains it.

I love your pictures of Savannah. Have a great time when you visit in a few weeks. You're lucky to visit in the Springtime- I look forward to seeing more pictures from your trip.
