Recovering well from the Tsunami

This is the largest island of Thailand. It is even bigger than the whole of Singapore. This is where I started my 18 day trip in Nov/Dec 2005, 11 months after the tsunami that devastated the region. I was there for 3 days before moving on to Khao Lak. After my 3 days, I can say that Phuket is recovering well as I truly did not see any remnants of the destruction that devastated the region. Phuket has an international airport and thus, it is a good base to visit places of scenic beauty around the region such as Ko Phi Phi, Phangnga Bay and several other islands.

Day Trips from Phuket

I decided to stay put in Phuket for the 3 days rather than move stay in the islands and places I wanted to go during that time. I find that it's more convenient for me to move on from Phuket after the end of the 3 days as it is quite accessible to the other parts of Thailand. For the first day, I explored a few places around Phuket Island. The other 2 days were spent on day trips. The first day trip was to Ko Phi Phi Le, Ko Phi Phi Don and Ko Khai. The second day trip was a sea kayaking tour around the beautiful Phangnga Bay north of Phuket.

Pros:"Good base to visit attractions in the region.."
Cons:"Can be rather touristy and expensive compared to other parts of Thailand"
