Things To Do: Snorkelling Around the Islands

  • I went on a liveaboard that was specialized in snorkelling. The liveaboard snorkelling tour is operated by Poseidon Bungalows near Khao Lak. So far, this is the only one I could find that specializes in snorkelling. Some liveaboard diving boats also allow snorkellers on board too if they are not full. The cost is 6500 baht for a 3 days liveaboard snorkelling tour on board Duang Ta. A liveaboard diving trip would cost much more.
Most of the spots that we went are rather deep so I felt that a diving trip would have been awesome. However, there are a few islands, island 1 and 2 that are closed to divers and opened only for snorkelling. We went there on the third day when the weather was the most perfect. Those are really beautiful spots. I would love to be back again.

    Things To Do: Kuerk Bay

  • Kuerk Bay is a beautiful white beach for relaxing in the largest island, Island No 8 or Ko Similan. You can climb up the rocks which are known as 'Sailing Rocks' or "Donald Duck Rocks' as the rock at the top resembles the shape of cap of Donald Duck. At the end of the climb, you will be able to get a nice view of the bay and the surroundings. If you are lucky, you will be able to witness an awesome sunset here but as the weather was rather gloomy and cloudy that day, we didn't get to see one. What a waste!

  • Princess Bay is the main beach on Island No 4 or Ko Mieng. It is one of the slightly more crowded beach among the islands. This is also where the National Park Headquarter is located. There are some bungalows operated by the National Park Authority on this island. Camping is also allowed for a fee. The beach area is named Princess Bay as the Thai Princess plays an active role in marine conservation. If you are lucky, you may see the rare blue Nicobar Pigeon and the flying fox on this island.

  • Honeymoon Bay is also located on Ko Mieng, on the opposite side of the island as Princess Bay. Honeymoon Bay can be reached on a short jungle trek from Princess Bay. This beach is rather secluded and beautiful. As the name suggests, perfect for a honeymoon.

  • If you are lucky, the dusk off Honeymoon Bay will be beautiful just like this picture. Our liveaboard boat moored off Honeymoon Bay for the night. We will pretty unlucky that evening too as the lights on our boat couldn't work for an hour or so. We had dinner in the dark and some helpful boats nearby shine their lights in our boat's direction. Luckily, our wonderful captain manage to fix the lights in an hour or so. He was very apologetic about what happened.

  • If you are lucky, you will sight the rare blue Nicobar Pigeon that is native to the islands. We sighted one hopping around Ko Mieng. Its rather difficult to get a good picture of the pigeon as it keeps on moving around.

  • This is the longest white sandy beach which is located on Ko Hu-Yong (Island No 1). However, only snorkelling is allowed near the beach but snorkellers are not allowed to get onto the beach as the island is protected by the Navy. The beach is also a place where turtles lay their eggs.

  • There are many beautiful rock formations around many of the islands. Usually, its good to snorkel or dive near these spots. Near the spot where this picture is taken, there are beautiful coral gardens.

  • The East of Eden is located on the east coast of Island No 7, Koh Payu. This is a good spot for divers or snorkellers to see nemos (clownfish) and turtles. I saw a lot of nemos here. However as the water is rather deep, diving would be a better option to see them upclose. However, I didn't see turtles here but my guide and a few other snorkellers did see turtles here. I was still on the dinghy when my guide saw one below.. arghh!!! My only consolation is to see two octopuses here.
