Home to nearly half of the Armenian population, Yerevan is clearly the hub for all activity in the country. It managed to achieve the status of a city of all-union importance in the Soviet Union and hence has a metro (only given to cities of more than a million people). It was a significant centre for hi-tech industry in the soviet era and suffered economically when it collapsed. The war with Azerbaijan in the 90s didn't help either. However, it has recovered, with assistance from the huge Armenian diaspora in Russia, the US, France and elsewhere. A sign of this is the enormous US embassy which you pass on your way in from the airport (apparently the biggest or nearly the biggest US mission in the world). |

Narunj Tue May 29, 2007 05:51 UTC Interesting tips. Recently the arrival hall of the new terminal has been finished too. So welcome to Armenia again! :) | MalenaN Mon May 28, 2007 16:05 UTC Both times I arrivied in Yerevan I came to the old terminal. Last time I left via the new terminal and it is really a big difference between the both when it comes to modernity. | Ken-out-of-Bath Sat May 26, 2007 01:38 UTC If you saw a romantic side to Yerevan's airport I would guess that you weren't there in the winter! It was like waiting insider a freezer! |
