Golden Aix-en-Provence

by thibeaux - last update: Apr 20, 2007

Cezanne residence - golden light through the trees
Paul Cezanne called Aix-en-Provence home and painted here extensively. In a letter to his son, he wrote, "I spend my days better here than elsewhere." Within seconds, it is clear how the "Aixoise" countryside would inspire beautiful art. I have no artistic talents whatsoever and was stopped in my tracks by the beauty. The light here is pure gold!
Cours Mirabeau

best truffles ever!

The city's main thoroughfare is the Cours Mirabeau. This is a very busy and active street. There are plenty of opportunities to shop, from glamorous boutiques to art galleries to charming brasseries (and banks, thank goodness). The street itself is wide and traffic zooms - be mindful when crossing! There are lovely fountains as well - from the Rotonde at the top end to the Moussue (that pours warm water even in the winter) in the center.

We spent a great afternoon at Les Deux Garcons just sipping espresso and people watching. However, my favorite place on Cours Mirabeau by far is Bechards! Truly, their truffles and calissons are divine! Whenever I learn anyone is going to France, my first question is whether they will be anywhere near Aix and if so, if I can give them money to pick some up for me.
Fountain at Place d'Albertas - low water time

City of Fountains

Aix is sometimes called the 'City of Water' or 'City of 1000 Fountains.' I don't know if there are a thousand, but there certainly are a lot and they are lovely! The fountain at the Place de la Rotonde at the top of Cours Mirabeau is almost overwhelming, but gorgeous. The smaller, moss covered Moussue in the center of the Cours Mirabeau is also known as the Fountain of Hot Water (Aix was built over hot springs). I think my favorite was Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins. The fountain itself is lovely and it is situated in a wonderful courtyard in the Mazarin section of town. Another popular stop is the fountain at Place d'Albertas - which some say is the most romantic place on earth. You'd have to judge for yourself though.
