"Chenini : troglodyts in the mountains" Shanini by mariev

Shanini Travel Guide: 47 reviews and 93 photos

Not to be confused with Chenini-Gabes (aka Chenini Oasis), Shanini , or as it is locally (and on most available road maps) spelled "Chenini" is one of the last apparently ihnabited troglodytic villages in Tunisia.

Nowadays, most of the inhabitants have moved in a more hospitalable site in the valley or -even - in the town of Tataouine, 18 kilometers away.

None of them stays in the old village the all year round, but some still use it in spring or fall (mostly to benefit from the tourists comming or for the elder ones, because they use to grow up there and are happy to 'come home' when the conditions aren't too extreme).

The only one coming here daily (at least when the road is open) is the keeper of the Mosque.
