Of the dead cities that I visited, Serjilla was easlily the most memorable. Situated on the eastern slopes of Ariha Mountain (more like a hill really), Serjilla is a Bynzantine settlement dating back almost 2000 years.
Unlike the other dead cities I visited, Serjilla truly resembles a 'city'. Stand back and look at it and you see it, complete with houses, baths, tombs and a chuch. A true settlement (the other cities I visited were more just random scattered ruins). |

MM212 Mon Oct 29, 2007 22:21 UTC Nice to see Serjilla in a different season, with no green grass. It's interesting that your only pages from Syria are on this dead city and Apamea. Would love to read about other places you visited. Cheers! Momo | maykal Tue Apr 11, 2006 17:54 UTC A shame I never made it to Serjilla, as it looks great in your photos :@P | TheWanderingCamel Sat Jul 16, 2005 15:36 UTC The Dead Cities fascinate me. Have you read William Dalrymple's "From the Holy Mountain" - great chapter on Serjilla and Al Bara. leyle |
