A city carved in the rock. | Classic picture of treasury, Petra. |
Well, what can I say about Petra that hasn't already been said?
Petra is spectacular. Truly. Petra is an essential part of any visit to Jordan, even if you're only in Jordan for a couple of days, do yourself a favor and go visit Petra. I'm sure you won't be dissapointed.
Petra is aproached by walking through what is called the Siq. The Siq is a long narrow gorge wich leads you to this classic photo opportunity, and the treasury. From here, after checking out the unremarkable interior to the treasury (such a grandiose exterior for essentially one cube room inside??? why???), turn to your right and set yourself loose and go explore Petra!
Before entering the Siq you must purchase your ticket. Generally I think it's 21JD for one day (thats what my ticket said), but due to Bushs 'war on terror' in Iraq, tourism has decreased. As a result, presumably to lure the tourists back, they halved the price to 11JD. Pick yourself up a nifty international student card (pretty much anywhere in the middle east they are available to people of any age, students, or as in my case, non-students), with wich you will pay 7JD. |
