Salento

Salento is a small little town, about 1hr to the north of Armentia, which is famous for it's proximity to the Cocora Valley as well as for its pink trout. The trout is served in most all restaurants in town, and should be tried at least once.

Aside from this, the town square and Calle Real (Carrera 6) have some nice typical buildings. At the end of Calle Real are some stairs going up to Alto de la Cruz, a hill from where there is a nice view over the town and the Cocora Valley on the other side. The hill also has a cross atop, hence the name.

Cocora Valley

The Cocora Valley is famous for its palma de cera, or wax palms. These, I was told, are the tallest variety of palm trees in the world, the variety that grows at the highest atltitude as well as the national tree of Colombia.

It is easy to visit Cocora Vally on a daytrip from Salento, with jeeps leaving from the town square going to Cocora. From this little hamlet, you must walk down a path, past a trout farm and over a bridge before you get to the trees. It is possible to continue past this into a forested area and eventually up to a lodge atop a mountain.
