Twizel - Heart of Mackenzie Basin

Twizel is a new town that was constructed in 1968. It is nested among Lake Ruataniwha, Lake Ohau, Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki, Lake Benmore and Lake Aviemore.

Twizel was part of Ruataniwha Station and used to be a hostel town for the construction workers who worked at the Upper Waitaki Power Development.

The most happening place in Twizel is the Market Place where restaurants, cafe, shopping centre, supermarket are. You may make enquiries for your hiking, fishing trips, boating, canoeing, rafting, cycling, hand gliding, skiing, scenic flights trips at the Twizel Information Centre.

    There's a new iHub information centre next to Poppys Cafe on the corner of Ostler Road and Benmore Place. It's excellent, has bike hire, outdoor clothing and is run by locals who really know the area. Far better than the old centre who couldn't help me!!!

    Did you know the final epic battle of lord of the rings 3 was filmed near twizel? I passed by this town but did not have a chance to visit it.

    smoked salmon pizza does sound like home. I miss the halibut pizza, smoked clams, and dungeness crab soup and pizza of Oregon. good tip and I will be sure to stop there when go through.
