C H I A N G M A I | great massage at Kwanjira at The Peak Nite Bizzare |
Chiang Mai is the gateway to Northern Thailand. It is Thailand's second-largest city after Bangkok. Located on a plain surrounded by mountains it is much greener and quieter than Bangkok and is called the "Rose of the North".
The airport is 4 km south-west of the city centre and is 15 mins away. Legal airport taxis charges a flat THB20 anywhere in the city. You can take a tuk-tuk or songthaew for about THB80 to get to the city centre.
The night bizzare is where every tourist will gather. We went there for our massage. Would suggest that you do all your shopping at Warorot Market and walk about 10 mins to the night bizzare. The night bizzare is becoming more of a tourist trap as they do not have any price tags and leave it to you to bargain. The best place to shop is still at the Sunday Night Market.
There are lots of temples which you could visit within the old city. Just print out a good map and follow it.
If you are looking for a budget accommodation, I would highly recommend Julie Guesthouse. They can arrange all your day trips and trekking trips for you at an affordable price.

D A Y T R I P S We signed up for 3 days trip arranged thru Julie Guesthouse.
Doi Inthanon - THB1000 Golden Triangle + Long Neck - THB1100 Elephant Ride, Bamboo Rafting, Hill Tribes - THB750
Highly recommended to sign up for these day trips as there many sightseeing and activities to do. Lot of opportunities to mingle with the hill tribe people, waterfalls and beautiful sceneries.

| 309 steps staircase leading up to Doi Suthep |
Doi Suthep We went up to Doi Suthep on our own following those comments given in the forum.
Took the red songthaew just outside our guesthouse to outside Chiang Mai University (THB20) where we transfer to another red songthaew which took 13 of us up to Doi Suthep (THB40).
The ride up the mountain is a bit windy and we almost threw up because it was very crowded and it took us about 45 mins to get up there as it was a Sunday and the week of King's Birthday.
To get back to city centre, take the red songthaew at the foot of the hill and it will cost THB30 or THB40 to alight at Chiang Mai Zoo and transfer to a red songthaew back to city centre (THB20). |
