Buses & Flights: Join Minibus
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: One of the cheapest mode of transportation from Airport to Patong Beach is to take the join minibus. Tickets are priced at THB150 and can be purchased at the counter upon exit of the arrival hall. You may also pay direct to the driver who will make purchase of the tickets on your behalf. The mini bus will depart when they have 10 passengers. Turn to your left and you will see a mini bus signage.

Although the price of THB150 is cheap compared to the price of a taxi, I would caution those in a hurry to pay the extra THB to have your own taxi to bring you direct to your destination. I would consider taking the join minibus as a tourist trap as they don’t even ask us where we were all going when we board.

Finally, we were all driven to a travel agent company where they gave an excuse that there were so many of us and need to check our tickets and make some rearrangements. So we were all asked to seat at the desk. The staff asked where we are going and have we booked our accommodations and tours. He tried to sell us accommodation and tour packages and we gave them the we are not interested look. We wasted half an hour of our time here where we have to wait for the rest to be brainwashed. Surprisingly, the rest were local Thais and they all signed up their packages either for tour or accommodations. Probably they were given locals prices.

    Buses & Flights: Tigerairways
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Airplane
Getting TO/AROUND: We took Tigerairways which departs from the Budget Terminal in the early mornings. Ticket was priced at S$150 each for a return trip with taxes included.

We don’t mind taking the budget airlines especially when the flight is less than 2 hours.

We were glad that we no longer need to pay the THB500 airport departure tax as it is now inclusive in the air fares.

If you need visa on arrival, join the queue and pay THB1,000 for the visa.

Getting TO/AROUND: If your plan is to go to Phuket Town direct from the airport, then for THB85, it’s a real budget choice of transportation. You can do your shopping at Central Festival, Big C, Tesco Lotus before heading to Patong Beach. A bus from Patong Beach to Phuket Town will cost only THB20.

At Phuket Airport there are two places that you can hop-on and off the bus. At level 1, at the left hand corner of the arrival hall of the Airport (beside the join mini bus area).
You may also board the Airport Bus just infront of Burger King at level 2.

The Airport Bus made stops from two station at the Phuket Airport and to Phantep Condotown, Surakun Stadium, Central /Big C / Lotus, Erawadee Bypass, Boat Lagoon, Heroines Monument, Pranangsang Temple, Baan Saku, Pearl Village Hotel.

Getting TO/AROUND: You could take a bus from Patong Beach to Phuket Town for THB20. Frequency is about 30 mins but we do see at least two buses at the depot everytime. The departure point is just opposite Café Del Mar at the southern end of Patong Beach.

The bus will travel through town via Bangla Road and stopping along the way to pick up passengers before finally heading off across the hills to Phuket Town.

    Transportation: Songthaew - Taxi Taxi
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: There are lots of red songthaew or taxis along Patong Beach. The drivers will pester you to take their taxi or they can bring you to tour around Phuket.

The songthaew are not metered and the drivers are notoriously mercenary. Do agree a price beforehand and do bargain hard. Short hops around town should not cost more than THB100.

For longer distances the metered taxis are generally a better choice.

There is also a cheaper option where you could hop onto a motorbike taxi and a ride within Patong starts from THB20.

Renting cars and taxis: Car Rental

Getting TO/AROUND: You may wish to consider renting a car to go about in Phuket. We rented a Toyota Yaris at KJ Shop for THB1000 for 24 hours. For a small Suzuki Jeep, the rental fee is about THB700 per day for a small Suzuki jeep.

I think renting a car would be a good option especially if you have 4 or 5 person. Do make sure that insurance is included in the car rental fees. Do read the fine prints before you sign on the dotted line.

Getting TO/AROUND: One of the cheapest way to go around Phuket is by renting a Motorbike THB200 as compared to a car THB1000. There are lots of free lance motorbike owners who can rent out their bikes.

Rental rates are charged by the hour or on 24hrs basis. Do bargain and check out the prices before renting. Check if insurance is included and read the fine prints before signing on the dotted line.

Renting cars and taxis: Taxi Fares
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: This is a rough guide on the Taxi fare (Tuk Tuk) from Patong Beach to various place.

THB 300 - Kamala Beach, Karon Beach
THB 400 - Phuket Town, Surin Beach, Kata Beach
    THB 600 - Airport

If you think the price are expensive, you may consider renting a car for a day for THB1000 or if you know how to operate a motorbike, the rental rate will only cost you THB200 a day.

To get to Promthep Cape for sunset, it is better that you have your own transport. Else you will be at the mercy of the tuk tuk drivers.
