"Forgotten Hilltown of Herzegovina" Pocitelj by travelbug102

Pocitelj Travel Guide: 17 reviews and 55 photos

This UNESCO protected site is still rebuilding from the war, but it appears nearly finished. It was an art colony before the war, though right now there seemed to be only a handful of artists back working. This was in the spring, so perhaps it blossoms in the summer ala Groznjan in Croatia.

There is a great fortress on top of the hill with incredible views of the Neretva river the hilltown itself. There are a few galleries open, along with a couple of cafes and vendors selling postcards and figs. You're almost guaranteed to have the town to yourself.

You can see what the town looked like before the war and some of the destruction they had to rebuild from here:

My second visit to Pocitelj in September of 2006. I noticed there were quite a few more cafes and also saw more people selling fruits/nuts/postcards.
