This is the largest city of South Africa and virutally created overnight when the gold boom started here at the end of the 19th century. Today one can say it is the city of South Africa where the money is, the Stock Exchange of South Africa is at home here, as are most larger corporations including all banks. Most of the foreign visitors will first arrive in Johannesburg, since the main international airport is also situated here. Johannesburg is also the capital of South Africa's smallest - and richest - province, called Gauteng, a Sesotho name meaning "Place of Gold". Gauteng makes up just 1,4% of South Africa's land area, but it is home to more than a fifth of the population and produces a third of the country's wealth. The city is the most densely populated and urbanised municipality in South Africa, home to 3 225 800 people in 1 006 900 households. |

SLLiew Mon Aug 3, 2009 23:09 UTC Cool page of Johannesburg. | junecorlett Tue Feb 10, 2009 10:05 UTC Good tips Mike, how about the Wanderers, we ARE the number ONE cricket team too!!! | b1bob Fri Oct 7, 2005 15:53 UTC Nice job. I especially like the restaurant tip. However, museums that make a social statement like the Apartheid Museum and holocaust museums aren't for everybody. I'm against those things, but don't like to be reminded whilst on holiday. |
