The name Umhlanga originates from the Zulu name for the word reeds. The Umhlanga River that flows into the Indian Ocean on the Northern boundary of the city is bordered by many reeds and as so many names in KwaZulu Natal a historical or natural meaning from the Zulu name remained the name till today.
Umhlanga in the past was a small town that offered a number of hotels and timeshare resorts along is beautiful beach and cost line and has grown continuously over the last few years.
The changes in South Africa opened the country for a number of foreign investors who bought property here and made the property prices climb into the sky.
When beaches were opened to all races in the early 1990's a move of mainly white people to the northern beaches of Durban became evident.
Today Umhlanga is a bustling residential area with many new developments, plenty of hotels and guest houses and a new massive shopping complex "Gateway" which was built right into the sugar cane fields.
It is the pleasure seekers ground for anyone wanting to spend a few days on the year round sun baked beaches of KwaZulu Natal.
