This “City of a Hundred Spires” was Monet’s inspiration for his impressionistic cathedral paintings; his favoured subject was the Gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame, one of the largest and most beautiful in France. Rouen’s emblematic Gros Horloge still advises the correct time, as it has for centuries. Joan of Arc went to her death here, a fact noted by a plaque marking the approximate spot of her demise.
Today, Rouen is a bustling, energetic port city not far from Paris or the beaches of Normandy. The River Seine divides the city in half, with the Right Bank (Rive Droite, home to the narrow streets of the historic section, and Rive Guache. filled with more modern housing and industry).
