  • Founded in 1076 during the Ly Dynasty, the temple complex is the site of the country’s first university, which is the pride of the nation and the most important educational centre. The unique entrance gate and 82 stone steles bear witness to an early high level of education at a time when the country gained independence from Chinese occupation. Take a walk through walled courtyards with ancient pavilions and enter the ornate main shrine dedicated to famous teachers and Confucius.

  • The central location of the lake offers great panoramic views. Residents credit Sword Lake with many myths and legends, including huge tortoises that inhabit these waters. In the middle of the lake, on a tiny island reached by a footbridge, stands the Ngoc Son Pagoda, dedicated to Tran Hung Dao, a hero who fought against Kublai Khan’s troops in the 13th century.

Things To Do: 36 STREET OLD QUARTERS
  • Tip Rating:
  • Named for the original 36 streets that formed the quarter, this is the most crowded and busy part of downtown. In streets, named each after a particular trade they once represented, merchants and buyers carry out a flurry of activities. Today, this is a shopping mecca for visitors and residents alike. Our group took a ride on one of the rickshaw type bicycles and enjoyed a different view of this busy part of Hanoi.

Things To Do: HO CHI MINH MAUSOLEUM SQUARE
  • Tip Rating:
  • The huge square is dominated by the monumental shrine containing the embalmed body of the “Father of the Country.” Together with the former Presidential Palace and one-time French governor’s residence, the square offers great photo opportunities.

    Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum: MAUSOLEUM
  • Tip Rating:
  • You may line up to enter the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, but be aware that there are usually long lines. (The mausoleum is only open from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.) Guards make sure that a strict protocol is followed: no shorts or tank tops, and no bags or cameras may be taken inside. Filing past “Uncle Ho” in his glass sarcophagus is a sombre experience in this spiritual centre of Vietnamese independence.

Things To Do: HO CHI MINH GARDEN AND COTTAGE
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just behind the Mausoleum you can find the Gardens and the Presidential Palace. One can stroll past tranquil lotus ponds to Ho’s stilt house. The cottage is a simple teak building resembling the homes of the ethnic hill tribes. Take a look inside this humble abode, which Ho preferred to living in the palace.

  • At the Thang Long Theatre you will be treated to a delightful performance of a unique Vietnamese tradition. The water puppetry was created by kings of the Ly Dynasty, a form of entertainment that is still very popular. The puppets are handled by artists pulling strings and poles under water. Acting out legends, the show is accompanied by folk music and special lighting.

G'Day Mike. One of our travel agents is offering a cheap 4 night package to either Hanoi or HCM City. I'm leaning towards to Hanoi. What do you think having visited both? Will read & rate your HCM City pages next.
