I arrived on Male from India by ship. Sailing across the many islands we reached the capital island and threw anchor, since the main commercial port was not able to accommodate a ship of our size. In contrast to the atolls and islands we had passed a different site greeted us here. Even though white sandy beaches line part of the island it is a concrete jungle. The island is only 1 kilometer wide and just over 1.7 kilometers in length and there is hardly any space left to build anything. The Maldives population is Muslim hence mosques are part of the city sites. Because of the size of the island I decided to walk everywhere and found it safe as well as convenient. The national museum, botanical gardens and the various markets are interesting places to visit - however if you would like to explore the beauty of the Maldives travel to one of the many islands. And there are 1192 islands to be explored!!!
Malé has got a population of 81,647 and is the capital of the Republic of Maldives. The city is located on Malé Island in the Kaafu Atoll. A commercial harbor is located in the Island. It is the heart of all commercial activities in the country. Many government buildings and agencies are located on the waterfront. The island is heavily urbanised, the city taking up essentially its entire landmass with this it is the world's most densely populated city. Four divisions make out the city: Henveiru, Galolhu, Maafannu and Machangolhi.

Nice writeup on Maldives. It is a paradise for scuba diving - feeding the sharks. Enjoyed your visit to the banana market though. Cheers, SL
