    • The Are Castle consists of some 900 year old ruins high towering above the Ahr Valley. From here one has a magnificent view of the town below and the curving Ahr River. In the past it was the administration for the city of Altenahr below.
    1689/90 was the castle occupied for the first time after it was usurrounded for 9 months. In 1714 troops from Cologne destroyed the castle.

    • Right above Altenahr is this view point that can be reached with a steep but short walk. A cross is placed here showing the religious commitment of the inhabitants. Reaching the top one gets magnificent views of Altenahr and the Ahr Valley.

    Directions: The View Point can be reached from the Rail Station. Follow the path to the left through a tunnel below the rail tracks and then climbing the hill on the right.

    • This is the Southern Side of Altenahr the smaller side of the town. Only a few restaurants and hotels are situated here.

    • This is the Northern Side of Altenahr located here is the centre of the tourism industry as well as the town hall and church.

    • This is one of the most magnificent medieval timber houses that originates back to the year 1716. Today it houses a restaurant

    • The Red Wine Hiking Trail starts in the town of Altenahr with the hike up to the Castle Are. From there one simply follows the sign posted trail that continues for 35 km to the town of Bad Bodendorf. The trail moves through the various wine estates and at times also passes through shady forests.
    En-route one can always retrun to the valley below and return to the starting point by rail.
    I did this trail on a Sunady during the harvest season and was delighted to find lots of wine stalls that offered samples of the wines of the region.

    • Another beautiful trail follows the course of the Ahr River. Signposted with an "A" it continues along the Ahr Valley floor, passed the river, sometimes along the hills and is another scenic way to explore thie part of the world.
