A Capitol City

by hquittner - last update: Aug 28, 2006

What we did there.

From the hotel window-what church?
We arrived in Den Haag on a Saturday evening. It is a large (about 500K pop) politixcal city whose venter houses the government and royal buildigs. We stayed in a quiet commercial hotel (Ibis Centrum) and on Sunday visited Madurodam and the Mauritshuis Picture Gallery. We drove out to the North Sea at the end of the suburb of Scheveningen and were so unimpressed by the experience that we did not take a picture there. It was Sunday and everything was quiet. Not so in the the other two sites. We did not walk around the city or see the Royal buildings. The two shots from the hotel window are therefore possbly poorly identified
From the hotel window- the Grote Kerk & tower(?)

How we chose to go there.

On our way back to the USA from Germany we decided to visit the Delta Works. We are from New Orleans and have just suffered flooding. hence we have great interest in what the Dutch have succeeded in doing. After spendng several hours at Neeltje Jans, we proceeded through the reclaimed areas , past Rotterdam to Den Haag. Our return of our car from that city was much easier (and cheaper to park) than to have returned from Amsterdam.

We missed much and why

I HAD to go to Madurodam. It was not my usual outing, but my father before me (a perpetual child but successful entrepreneur) was entranced by it and I have 50 year old pictures that he made there, so a trip was mandatory. Apparently my second-childhood is not so advanced. I would rather see the full-sized elements. For Dutch children it seems exciting and other children enjoy it too. What do they see if they have never been to those places?

Excellent comments by a "connaisseur" on the paintings of the Mauritshuis.
