The Most Interesting French Region | A Cathedral view from the Eure |
What a nondescript name for a Region of France that contains so many priciple tourist sites. Not only are almost all of Les Grand Chateaux ici, mais la ville de Chartres which contains the greatest Gothic Cathedral in the world set in a quaint old town that begs you to wander through it. |
There is more to Centre There is another great cathedral in Centre that should not be missed which is in Bourges. In fact the whole city is of interest. If you are intersted in old buildings, the mansion of Jacques Coeur is really something unusual both inside and out. Tucked in the bend of the Loire near the Northeast are the extremely fine Romanesque Church of St.-Benoit-sur-Loire inhabited by monks whose daily rituals include performing beautiful Gregorian Chant. Only 4 km away from this is Germigny-des-Pres with a well preserved church of 806 containing a 5C apse mosaic probably from Ravenna. It is a worthwhile break from "chateau-hopping" |

|  | Where We Have Stayed in Centre Spending nights and using a place as a base of operations has allowed us to visit Chartres and Bourges in depth. We have also based ourselves near Tours and most enjoyably a few km. from the Chambord, where we stayed at a private chateau on the Loire. This upscale "B&B" was so pleasant that we have taken our 4 grown sons and their wives to it while "chateaux-hopping". We also engaged to have two gourmet table d'hote dinners there complete with proper local wines, aperatifs and after dinner brandy.
