Metaponto,- tum, - tion, lido

There are at least 3 different places here that respond to the call of Metaponto. First there is a vigorous beach resor (Lido di) that was virtually deserted whem we drove by. Is has a fine beach on the Ionian Sea

Museo Archeologico Nazionale

The second is the ruins of Metapontion across the street from the Museo and the Museo itself. The ruins and Museo each have a Tip that we have created

The ruins of Metapontion

More important to the tourist than any of these is a "standing" piece of a Temple of Hera. It is about 2 km from where these pictures are taken. A picture of it is in our Introduction to Basilicata.
There is one more sight , visible boyond the Archeological Park in which we stand, and it is about 1 km away at the edge of the "city". It is the theater whose wall (restored) you can see.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:If you are nearby, this is worth the visit
  • Cons:It may not be worth the trouble
  • In a nutshell:Do NOT miss the Tavole Palatine(T. of Hera} nearby!
