Celimontana | Ludus Magnus; Colosseo: Paco Oppio(L>R) |
This was our seventh visit to Rome and its suburbs, but the first for our baby-sitters (our son and daughter (in-law)). Many years ago I became professionally associated with a Roman-born colleague who owns a flat near the Colosseo on the Celimontana (Celian hill). We have used this abode on our latest trips . This has allowed us to become a little like working Romans. Situated near metro, bus and tram we have learned how to survive rush hour and do frequent 5-10 stop shopping in 3 blocks for victuals and sundries( instead of Sam's Club or Walmart). Partly from our increasing familiarity and partly from the continuing effort of the Italians in charge of the Antiquities, we have watched our local favorite places develop as better sightseeing venues: the Colosseo from a famous pile of stones to a thematic museum, the continuing improvement in the Fora, our private favorite church San Clemente becoming a better tourist-trap, and the" hole in the ground" around the corner, the Roman ruin of the Ludus Magnus, looking more like it will become a vacation home for the feral cats of the Largo Argentina. |
