Ingres and Boudelle Were Born Here

We made a day-trip by car to Montauban (pop. 56K) from our base in Toulouse. We went to see its highly rated Art Museum (Michelin 2*) containing a number of canvases by Ingres (plus 4000 drawings) and sculptures by Bourdelle. Both are native sons who endowed their home town. It is always rewarding to see what a successful artist keeps and does not sell and ponder why. The town center (in the Place Nationale) retains some of the appearance of the bastide that was the town origins and there are pleasant views at the river where the 13C Pont-Vieux still functions. It is a contemporary of the one in Cahors. It was a relaxed day, well spent and the Bourdelle works were a bonus.

The Ingres Museum

It exhibits more than works by Ingres and sculptures by Bourdelle. He bequeathed some works by his pupils and others that he owned. There are also works from other sources (14-20C) including some by anther native son Desnoyer (20C). There are antiquities and cabinets containing early faience and apothecary jars.

The Town

A walk through Montauban is quite rewarding. It has the remains of its bastide origins, older than the Pont-Vieux
