"In the Line of Fire" Saint-Lô by hquittner

The accuracy of the bombing in WWII was not great. We stopped to see some unrepaired effects here en route from Mont St.-Michel to the D-Day Beaches, as a point of reference for our 10 yr. old grandson. St.-Lo was heavily contested as it was a railhead and junction for supplying the German lines. It was only taken on July 17! Of course the destruction was severe. The West facade of the Cathedral took hits; the North Tower and spire of the South were deleted as well as large segments of the vaulting. This is a quick way to "see" war damage. The church is worth entering while you are here. A five minute walk will bring you to a nearby belvedere on the Ramparts for a view of the valley and bocage. The very ancient defensive walls were exposed by the bombing and have been restored with beautification. Out of town is a National thoroughbred horse breeding farm (Haras).
