Provincial capital of North Sumtara, Medan is a cosmopolitan city over 5 million inhabitants and a booming commercial center for the region's huge oil and agri businesses. As a result of major international invstments in plantation agriculture from the 1807s onward, it grew from a tiny village to a proporus colonial city by 1943. Today by far the largest city on Sumtarta island and the 4th largest in the nation after Jakarta, Surabaya and Bandung.

With the mystical island of Samosir at its center Lake Toba a huge volcanic depression set high in the treeless mountains of northern sumatra forms the very heart of the beautiful but often harsh Toba Batakland. This is the largest lake in osutheast Asia measuring 100 km long north to south and 31 km across with a surface area about the size of Singapore. This is also the world's deepest lake, over 450 meters deep, though accurate surveys of the lake floor have yet to be made. The lake surface lies 906 meter above sea level but may once have been 150 meter higher. The water level has begun to subside again in recent years and no adequet explanation for this has yet been given.

Samosir Island the huge arid Island of the Dead in the middle of Lake Toba is stark remmant of second powerful explosion that rocked this volcanic cauldron some 30,000 years ago. At that time a subsidiary peak formed which then subsuquently split and slumped back into the earlier crater. The eastern part now forms the Prapat penisula and Uluan shore down to Poresa, the western egds form Samosir. The island which measure 45 km by 20 km was infact originally a penisula, it became an island after the Dutch dug a canal through the narrow 200 meter isthmus connecting it in to the mainland at Panguruan in 1906.
