Ettal Abbey was founded on 28 April 1330 by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian on his return from Italy along the trade route between Italy and Augsburgduring.
He carried from Rome a statuette of the Virgin Mary of the Pisano School: a gift from Ludwig to his new foundation. This statue soon became an object of pilgrimage.
The original Gothic abbey church, built between 1330 and 1370, was very small.

In 1709 was established the "Knights' Academy" which developed into a highly successful school and began the educational tradition of the abbey.
In 1744 the abbey and the abbey church were largely destroyed in a fire.
It was rebuilt in the Baroque style, with a double-shelled dome, made by the the Swiss-Italian architect Enrico Zuccalli who had studied with Bernini. On the facade he made big statues of the apostles.

The abbey was dissolved in 1803 during the secularization of church property in Bavaria. The site was acquired in 1809 by Josef von Elbing. During the 19th century were made some small building works: the renovation of the facade and the twin bell towers.
In 1900 the abbey was given to the Benedictines of Scheyern Abbey, who re-founded the monastery. Today the abbey has got a community of more than 50 monks.

The courtyard of the abbey is fantastic!!! Along it there are the buildings of the secondary school specialising in the humanities and modern languages. Ettal also runs a brewery and distillery, a bookshop and a hotel. The courtyard is the best place if you want to relax!!!

The Baroque interior is fantastic. All the walls are covered with plasters, angels, statues and decorations. Very beautiful are the six side altars with statues of saints served as Johann Georg Ublher and Franz Xaver Schmuzer.

Things To Do: The Dome's Fresco

The fresco of the dome has been realized by Johann Jakob Zeiller between 1748 and 1750. The fresco shows the adoration of the Trinity made by St. Benedict and of its followers with 430 figures painting.

The main altar is built where there wa the choir in the medieval church. Here you can see the marble statue given by Ludwig the Bavarian. Around the stateu there are some beautiful gilded panels in bas-relief with scenes of the passion.

The platform in which the beautiful Baroque organ is found is work of Johann Baptist Zimmermann. Fantastic the cherubs that stretch out to the outside of the platform.
