Things To Do: Hohes Schloss

The castle Hohes Schloss was built in 1291 on the site of a Roman installation on the hill of the town. In 1322 the castle became ownership of the bishops of Augsburg. During the 1500 it was restored and it maintained unchanged the defensive character of the complex as you can still see today from the mighty boundaries.

Inside the walls of the castle you can see a court with all around the buildings embellished with frescos made in 1500 that shows windows, sculptures and bovindoes. Inside these buildings there is the Staatsgalerie with paintings and sculptures of local Rainassance artists.

The monastery and the basilica of St. Mang were built in 750 from St. Magnus and modernized in a baroque style in 1700 by the architect Johann Jakob Herkomer. Today the monastery accommodates the town hall and the municipal museum.

The interior of the church of St.Mang is made with three naves with Baroque decorations. In the crypt there is the grave of St.Mang and a beautiful fresco.

The Lech river has been for centuries an important artery of communication that allowed the exchenging between Austria and Bavaria. Just overcome the German border there is a small fall devoted to the King of Bavaria Max I as you can see from the monument.
