The Powder Gate (Prasnà Bràna) was one of the 13 gateways of the Old Town. The Powder Gate (65 meters tall) was erected in 1475 on the place of a preceding tower in Gothic style. In the fifteenth century it lost its defensive function and it became a representative symbol of the most important town of the Bohemian kingdom: the old town of Prague.

The tower was built next to the Royal Court which rose on the place where today is located the Town House. The sovereigns had lived in the Royal Court since 1383 to 1483. In that period Vladislav Iagellone transferred the court to the Castle of Prague and the building was abandoned.

The abandonment of the Royal Court interrupted the works of the Powder Gate. In the 17th century it was used as deposit of the rifle dusts and from that period it brings the actual name. The principal reconstruction developed it in the eighties of the nineteenth century.

The interior of the church of St. James has got fantastic baroque decorations. On the ceiling there is a Holy Cycle with life of Marie made by Frantisek Voget, while the principal altar is work of Vaclav Vavrinec Reiner. Also the other altars are masterpieces of other artists among which Petr Brandl detaches.

Inside the church of St. James is possible to see the grave of the count Vratislao of Mitrovice, performed by the sculptor Ferdinand Brokof on project of Johann Bernhard Fisher von Erlach. The legend say that the count has been buried alive: its dead body was found sat in the sepulchre. To the right of the entrance you can see the mummified arm of a thief that had tried to steal the jewels of the lady on the greatest altar. The virgin held back him so people amputated the arm. Above the entrance it is possible to see the beautiful organ.
