Basse Normandie: a place rich in history

by Cristian_Uluru - last update: Feb 29, 2008

MONT-SAINT-MICHEL
The Basse-Normandie is an administrative region of France. It was created in 1956, when the Normandy region was divided into Basse-Normandie and Haute-Normandie.

The Basse Normandie has got a very long story. During the Roman era there were some important settlement in the Caen region. It was conquered by the Franks in the 5th century untill the 9th century when the Norman conquests devastated the region. In 1066, William the Bastard conquered England, becoming William the Conqueror, or William I of England and under its reign the Normandie knewn a period of prosperity with the construction of fantastic cathedral in Caen and Bayeux. The victory of Tinchebray in 1106 gave Normandy to the Plantagenets. Nearly one hundred years later, in 1204, Philippe Auguste confiscated the region. Then, during the Hundred Years' War, the region was annexed by England. The French regained the region from 1436 to 1450 and by 1468, it was entirely under the control of the French monarchy.

But the Normandie was also the field of the most important battles of the Second War World with the Operation Overlord on 6th June 1944 when the US Army, the Canadian, the French and the English landing on the beaches of the Normandie (Omaha Beach, Juno Beach, Gold Beach, Utah Beach and Sword Beach) to fight the German army.
Today you can see many testimonies of those days of the 1944.

Enjoy your visit of this fantastic region called Basse Normandie!!!
