Tivoli is a wonderful town located just 40 km from the centre of Rome.
The town was established in the 13th century BC and it was called Tibur Superbum. The town became very important during the Roman age becoming a resort area famed for its beauty and its good water, and was enriched by many Roman villas. The most famous one, of which the ruins remain, is the Villa Adriana (Hadrian's Villa, in English) inscripted in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1999.
During the Middle Ageas and Renaissance Tivoli keep its status of a resort town and further villa were constructed. The most famous of these is the Villa d'Este, a World Heritage Site since 2001, whose construction started in 1549 by Pirro Ligorio for Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este and richly decorated with an ambitious program of frescoes and a wondeful garden rich of fountains.
Another very nice villa you can visit is Villa Gregoriana located in a fantastic park with the waterfall of the Aniene River and many Roman ruins like the Temple of Vesta.
Tivoli has got to offer and it is a fantastic place where to spend a day outside the crowd Rome.
Enjoy your visit!!!
