Fluctuat nec mergitur...

by Maillekeukeul - last update: Aug 4, 2005

... it is no litterature !!!

The splendid Church of Sacre Coeur....
The strange title of this page is actually Paris' motto, universally famous (especially among people fond of latin phrases). It means, more or less, "It always floats and never sinks"... It might derive from the inner islands' form (City and Seine Islands have the form of a ship) or maybe because Paris has been many times under the threat of a complete destruction but is still alive and proud of its multiple resources... If you have a good sight, you may read the motto on the sculptures of Paris' coat of arms...

Should I sit or should I go ?

Standing or sitting, that is the question...

In travelers' minds, as well as in many other minds around the world, Paris is a paradoxical city. While it's the artistic, business and gastronomic capital, you'll see there as many people walking in the streets, like in a daytime Manhattan, as at the terraces of cafes, sitting and doing nothing but enjoying a pause and attending the show of walking people ...

That's what's typical here... People know when it's time to work, and when it's time to relax and enjoy life. The balance does not upgrade us to the 1st industrial and business rank, but many say that France is the best country to live... And, in way, I'm pretty prone to agree with this idea.... !!!

Buildings and sky...

Don't forget that Paris is a big city, and that, as in any other big city, the most flourishing items are buildings. So, whatever the number of monuments and attractive places is, for those who live in Paris, the beauty is a matter of sky width... And, believe me, watching a wide-open sky may constitute a real challenge ...
