Historical Astoria

Astoria - Megler Bridge
Full of history and beautiful Victorian homes, and located on the mighty Columbia River, Astoria, Oregon is really such an interesting town. Founded 200 years ago the town now has a population of just over 10,000 people. It is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies. Famous names associated with Astoria include Lewis & Clark (expedition) and John Jacob Astor, for whom the town was named.

The Astoria-Megler Bridge is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America spanning the mouth of the Columbia River between Astoria and Point Ellice, Washington. You can find a nice spot by the bridge, have a snack, relax, and watch life on the water go by.
Along the Waterfront - Astoria
Today tourism, Astoria's growing art scene, and light manufacturing are the main economic acitivites of the city. Astoria has also been the home of many Hollywood movies. Some of the movies filmed in Astoria are: Kindergarten Cop, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, The Goonies, and Free Willy. You can pick up a map at the Visitor's Center and visit the locations.

I recommend seeing the highlights that include the Maritime Museum, the Astoria Column, and the Flavel House. Tour the waterfront - whether by the Astoria Trolley (see my transportation tip) or walking. Walk around and see some of the beautiful Victorian homes. Check out the unique shops in town or stop by a cafe for something to eat.

I am a big city lover but have to say that I was very charmed by Astoria!
