  • The Dolphin Discovery Centre is an educational attraction that is convemiently located near the Dolphin Interaction Zone at Koombana Bay in Bunbury.

The centre is open to visitors every day from 8.00am-4.00pm (Summer) and 9.00am-3.00pm (Winter).

They are closed for the Christmas break on the 25th December.

    Admission fees
    $4.00 Adults
    $2.00 Concession
    $2.00 Children
$9.00 Family of 2 Adults and All Children

If your accommodation is near the CBD you can easily walk there in about 15 minutes. But it may take a bit longer if you are tempted to gawk and dawdle along the beach.

During the summer months you could also catch the Bunbury Tram as the Dolphin Discovery Centre is along their Bunbury Tour.

  • Each morning some inquisitive local Bottlenose Dolphins swim up to the Koombana Bay shore to check out the humans that have travelled from far and wide to allow themselves to be studied by these curious marine mammals.

After anywhere from a half to one hour the dolphins have generally satisfied their natural curiosity and swim away again to get themselves a feed of fresh fish that are plentiful around the bay.

  • These underwater picture were taken with a Canon A70 digital with a custom built underwater housing.

Unfortunately the conditions were a bit murky on the day they were taken and the dolphins only get close enough for a pose if they choose to.

So you will need to be very patient to take your underwater shots but as you can see the dolphins do get close enough eventually. But then you will need to be extra quick taking photo's because they won't sit still too long.

  • There is plenty of time and opportunity for a close encounter with these friendly mammals of the sea.

There are plenty of volunteers who will shepherd you into formation so that everyone has an opportunity for an aquatic encounter of the dolphin kind.

  • A short 15 minute walk from my home is Hastie Street beach which is so called because it is situated where Hastie Street meets Ocean Drive. It is part of a 60km unbroken stretch of golden beach from Bunbury down to Dunsborough.

There are many other fine beaches along Bunbury's coastline and Hastie Street isn't necessarily the best of them. But it is one of the most convenient for me so I swim here as often as I can during summer.

Conditions vary from clear and calm in the morning to rough and choppy when the sea breeze comes in the afternoon. The water temperature can be chilly in winter but very refreshing during those hot summer days.

  • When you get here find yourself a piece of beach and go swimming. snorkelling, surfing or whatever... it's never busy so finding your own bit of beach is easy.

I like to go body surfing which involves paddling as fast as you can with the wave to catch a ride... but do be careful of "dumpers"... which are those waves that pick you up and crash you toward the beach at an alarming speed with uncontrolable force... and you end up with a snoz full of water and your bathers full of sand!

  • The Marlston Hill Lookout Tower isn't all that high but certainly more than enough to deter the acrophobic.

Built in 1988, the lookout looks directly over the harbour beach, the small boat harbour and the breakwater reaching out from casuarina point.

It was built by local builders, Devaughs, at a cost of $150,000 of which $100,000 was contributed by the State Bicentennial programme and the remaining $50,000 was donated by the builders as a bicentennial gift to the city of Bunbury.

Local architect, Sasha Ivanovich designed the lookout, and the Bunbury Leschenault Rotary Club were the project organisers.

Robert, Should have read your pages before going to Bunbury. I love stopping over at Bunbury when going from Perth to Margaret River. The Lighthouse resort is a fab place to stay and watch the sunsets.
