"Pulau Penang" Penang by robertgaz

Pulau Penang

Pulau Penang is the oldest of the British settlements around Malaysia and you will still find good examples of colonial architecture dotted around the island especially in Georgetown.

Georgetown itself is also a "real" Chinatown with a more traditional Chinese feel to it than either Singapore or Hong Kong and times seem to stopped in the older parts of town.

It is dubbed as the "Pearl of the Orient" and glossy brochures will tell you all about its glorious golden beaches. Personally, I would have to disagree with this tourism promotion.

Having said that, I still love the place. It has a laid back atmosphere and the locals seem fairly relaxed and not at all pushy when it comes to shopping at the nightly markets.

An interesting little page Robert. The Snake Temple sounds interesting as do the various plantations.

Great tips from the past on your visit to Penang! I like the sound of the Casuarina Beach Resort - just my kind of place. I've always wanted to try the taste of a durian but, so far, have never been within range of them!
